The official language of Portugal is Portuguese
Derived from Latin roots, Portuguese is also an official language in eight other countries.
In larger cities such as Lisbon, Porto, and Coimbra, English is widely spoken, especially in central and tourist areas. Spanish, French, and other languages may also be spoken. It never hurts to ask politely; if someone speaks your language, they will usually be happy to use it.
In major cities, staff at larger hotels and department stores will generally speak English and be glad to help. Here are some tips to get you started in Portuguese:
he euro is the official currency of Portugal, as well as of most European Union countries. It is divided into 100 cents.
Coins come in denominations of 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, and €1 and €2. Banknotes come in denominations of €5, €10, €20, €50, €100, and €200, and are distinguished by size and color.
The euro was introduced in 1999, but cash was only introduced in 2002, when it replaced national banknotes and coins at fixed conversion rates. Portugal was among the first countries to adopt the euro, along with 10 other countries.
How do I convert my foreign currency to euros?
You can convert your currency at an authorized exchange office or bank, or you can withdraw euros from an ATM.
ATMs in Portugal
A convenient way to get cash in Portugal is to withdraw euros from an ATM. Most Portuguese ATMs accept major credit and debit cards, and your bank may charge a foreign transaction fee. Fees can vary, but they are typically displayed on the ATM screen before you complete the transaction, allowing you to decide whether to proceed.
The Portuguese ATM network is Multibanco (MB). Euronet Worldwide and ATM Express are the main foreign ATM networks operating in Portugal.
ATM safety: Using an ATM in Portugal is generally considered safe. However, be sure to inspect the machine before you use it. Try pulling firmly on the card slot to make sure it is not a skimming device. Also check that the keypad does not have an overlay that could be used to record your PIN. These precautions are recommended worldwide.

Winters in Lisbon are mild, and summers are warm. The climate is moderate because of the city’s coastal location. In spring and fall, days are generally sunny, with mild temperatures.
Temperatures typically range from about 46°F (8°C) in winter to about 97°F (36°C) in summer.
What is the average temperature in May?
In May, days are warm and pleasant. You can expect sunny weather, with temperatures typically ranging from about 59°F to 79°F (15°C to 26°C), which is ideal for walking and exploring Lisbon and Sintra. Because Sintra has a microclimate, cloudy mornings are common, but they usually clear by noon.
In Portugal, the standard voltage is 230/400 volts at a frequency of 50 hertz, and sockets comply with European standards.
You can use your electrical appliances in Portugal if your country uses the same voltage. Otherwise, you will need a 230-volt transformer and an adapter to use American-style flat-prong plugs or other plug types.
What plug is used in Portugal?
Portugal uses Type C and Type F power outlets, the same plug types used in most European countries.
